There are any number of author plugins out there for use with WordPress sites. Over the years we have tested many and this weeks POTW is another one of our favorites.
WordPress Compatability: 3.0 – 3.4.2

A rather simple plugin to add an author widget. While most Author plugins are about providing a larger block at the bottom of the post, (we will get to some of them later),
We like this one for actually being “less intrusive”.
If you look at the bottom of this page, you will see my Author Box located in the bottom left corner of the page.
It includes several fields that allow me to provide valuable information about myself and give you the reader (or clients) to ability to learn a little bit more about me.
There are several options on this plugin, and one that we like is that you can disable the Author box for Admins.
Why disable the admin author boxes?
well security in part. When author information is posted within WordPress it is often done using a link to the authors username, which makes it easier to brute force login pages when you already know the username.
You may notice that there is no link to all my other posts. The plugin also gives you some options for showing name, username, or partials. Which means that you can determine what information you are showing publicly.
Additional fields are included into the user profile to cover phone numbers, email address, company, title, and even extra fields for Instant messanger options.
While the social section is a little on the sparse side, having the big four, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, and Twitter, for a business site like this one are more then enough.
The plugin fits well into most themes, using the build in CSS styling of the site to match well. No modifications were done to use it on this website.
While the plugin is listed to WordPress 3.4.2, we have had no problems with this plugin at all. Compatability testing we have done have showed little concern.
There is always room for improvement when it comes to plugins. For this plugin it would be nice to see some additional options for social networks. Future comparability verification from the developer would also be nice.

As this plugin was the POTW, it is still only fair to list a few of the runner up plugins. These are additional author plugins that we like, and in many cases use on sites, as it always depends on both the site look and the client choices. We felt these author plugins may not have fit into the overall theme for this site, but could easily have been used in place of of the above author plugin.
StarBox – Author Box For Humans – Most updated author plugin as this is listed for compatability for WordPress 3.6.1, Pretty standard author boxes, with functionality of several box styles, include standard, dropdown, horizontal or vertical layouts.
Fancier Author Box By ThematoSoup – Nice looking Author Box, in fact we used this on another site before recent theme changes forced us to take it out. This plugin has been recently updated to work with 3.6.1. This would have been a top choice for POTW if it only had a WIDGET option. Perhaps the developers will add one. It may be in their Top paid version – Fanciest Author Box
Social Author Bio – Another top runner up was this plugin. This plugin offered more flexibility in the social site list as well as an option for which user level to begin using the author box. I think if the functionality of this plugin was expanded this would likely be a future POTW. I loved the image the developers used for their WordPress listing, making it geared toward guest posters.
