Plugin Of The Week – 9/23/2016 – UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup
UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup and Restoration Made Easy
When you go through your website’s security plugins consider adding UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup to your list.
While most people do not think of backups as a security concern it really should be one of the most important concerns you need to address.
No matter how secure your site is, the need for a safe and reliable backup copy is more important then security itself. Even in the event your site gets hacked, deleted by some malicious code or you simply forget to pay your web-hosting fees. a backup copy of the site means your risk and loss are limited.
This is where having a sound backup routine is important. Too many people simple use a backup plugin that stores the files within their own site. This is not wise. In the event your site is lost so would be your backups.
Major corporations will often keep a local backup AND an off-site backup. Sometimes these are even kept on more then one off-site location just to add another level of redundancy. When it comes to having website backups these days you’re only limited by the available space you need to store them.
This is where UpDraftPlus comes in.
UpdraftPlus simplifies backups (and restoration). Backup into the cloud (Amazon S3 (or compatible), Dropbox, Google Drive, Rackspace Cloud, DreamObjects, FTP, Openstack Swift, UpdraftPlus Vault and email) and restore with a single click. Backups of files and database can have separate schedules. The paid version also backs up to Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Storage, SFTP, SCP, and WebDAV.
When it comes to backups, one of the most important things to keep in mind is the accuracy and reliability. Updraft has been one of the most consistent backup utilities I have used for WordPress.
Top-quality: UpdraftPlus is the highest-ranking backup plugin on wordpress.org, with over 800,000 currently active installs. Widely tested and reliable, this is the world’s #1 most popular and mostly highly rated scheduled backup plugin. Millions of backups completed!
Other backup utilities I have used in the past have had a tendency to stop functioning after a while. This became increasingly problematic by forcing me to take extra time to do manual backups. On several occasions this meant backups hadn’t been performed at there properly scheduled schedule, causing a loss of work in some cases where the sites weren’t being updated regularly. That kind of behavior from a backup plugin cannot be tolerated. I have never encountered this kind of problem with the UpDraftPlus plugin.

Getting Started With UpDraftPlus
I found the Updraftplus plugin to be quite easy to setup as well. In fact almost too easy. If your just getting started you can easily pick either the FTP or Email options and fil;l in the settings below the backup list. If you are looking for better options, consider using one of the other options for cloud based storage such as the Google Drive, DropBox MS Azure or RackSpace just to name a few.
The layout for displaying recent backups is nicely formatted for easy reading.
UpDraftPlus also includes instructions on how to setup those services in order to accomplish the backup option you choose.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Services do change from time to time. For instanceGoogle Drive changed their interface. While I would hope developers would also update their instructions, it is understandable that this is not always possible right away. So don’t entirely be surprised if the instructions are not exact.
Upgrading To UpDraftPlus Pro
In case the basic free plugin options aren’t enough for you they do also offer a premium version of UpDraftPlus. The feature list for the UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup premium version includes such nice features as: database encryption, backups to multiple remote destinations, Migrate/clone websites and even the ability to restore backups from other plugins.
The cost, $145 for unlimited Developer licenses, is not overly expensive when you consider the quality and options this plugin offers.
What We Think
UpDraftPlus.com offers a comparison chart between itself and several other popular WordPress backup plugins here: https://updraftplus.com/wordpress-backup-plugin-comparison/
Even if you take the chart with a grain of salt, the fact is that this is one well designed and feature packed backup plugin. They are working hard to keep themselves as the #1 backup utility for WordPress. It makes it easy for the masses to backup to an off-site cloud service such as Google Drive. Most people could easily just use the free Google Drive space you get with a Gmail account, especially when you can make a Gmail account specifically for each of your websites.
What have you got to lose? Nothing. The plugin can be used for free. You can upload to free storage space. You can install it in about 30 minutes or less (depending on how well you follow instructions). 🙂
This has become the go to wordpress backup plugin for securing backups of your WordPress websites and we will likely be using it long into the future.
