Two Favorite Security Plugins Get Upgraded

During September two of our favorite plugins received some updates. While Apocalypse Meow got only a minor update the ARYO Activity Log plugin has undergone some major changes in 2014. Let’s take a quick look at these two plugins.

Apocalypse Meow

This plugin provides several key features that are not always present in some of the larger security plugins. A brief overview of this plugin shows that the key features include:

  • brute force login protection
  • enforced minimum password requirements
  • historical log of all login attempts and success
  • Direct PHP execution restrictions
  • as well as disabling admin username, internal plugin editor, and more

We have used this plugin in the past on a case by case basis, depending upon the need for these features. As stated we have encountered larger security plugins that might miss one or more of these features. (which is not the fault of this plugin by any means).

Make sure that if you are using other security plugins that the above features are included, if not then consider adding this plugin as a secondary plugin to round out your overall security measures.

  • Version: 1.6.0
  • Author: Blobfolio, LLC
  • Last Updated: 9-4-2014
  • Requires WordPress Version:3.4 or higher
  • Average 5-Star Rating: 5

  • In honor of Heartbleed, there is now a tool for resetting all user passwords en masse;

  • Allow alternate $_SERVER variables for proxy installations (thanks jjfalling);
  • Minor code clean up;

ARYO Activity Log

The ARYO logger plugin has become one of our overall favorite plugins, so much in fact that is was listed as our POTW post here: Plugin Of The Week 9/30/2013 – ARYO Activity Log

This was even before se saw what the authors have come up with to improve the plugin. Since the 2.0 iteration of this plugin the authors have seen fit to add even more trackable functions to the plugin. Many of these might seem like overkill if you have a single user blog, but if you have more then one person who can edit or manage your site then these features are a blessing.

As sites grow larger and larger it becomes harder to know exactly who did what. ARYO does a wonderful job of keeping track of things that can be valuable to admins in the event there is a problem with the site.

Here is a list of what this plugin can track for you:

  • WordPress – Core Updates
  • Posts – Created, Updated, Deleted
  • Pages – Created, Updated, Deleted
  • Custom Post Type – Created, Updated, Deleted
  • Tags – Created, Edited, Deleted
  • Categories – Created, Edited, Deleted
  • Taxonomies – Created, Edited, Deleted
  • Comments – Created, Approved, Unproved, Trashed, Untrashed, Spammed, Unspammed, Deleted
  • Media – Uploaded, Edited, Deleted
  • Users – Login, Logout, Login has failed, Update profile, Registered and Deleted
  • Plugins – Installed, Updated, Activated, Deactivated, Changed
  • Themes – Installed, Updated, Deleted, Activated, Changed (Editor and Customizer)
  • Widgets – Added to a sidebar / Deleted from a sidebar, Order widgets
  • Menus – A menu is being Created, Updated, Deleted
  • Setting – General, Writing, Reading, Discussion, Media, Permalinks
  • Options – Can be extend by east filter
  • Export – User download export file from the site
  • WooCommerce – Monitor all shop options
  • bbPress – Forums, Topics, Replies, Taxonomies and other actions
  • and much more…

Even for single admin sites this plugin can prove quite useful. Just imaging how many times you have done something wrong and forgotten what you wanted to fix. Well, those days are gone. Go ahead and delete the wrong plugin and it will let you know.

This plugin also should have a decent future upgrade path as well. I do not see as there would be less things to track as more and more plugins come out to the WordPress community. We look forward to seeing this plugin around for some time.
