WordPress Customization framework imagesWordPress Customization Is On The Way

Here’s a quick post about the future of WordPress customization and your ability to edit your website. As if WordPress wasn’t already easy enough to customize, It looks like it hopes to make it even easier in the future. A recent post on WordPress Tavern, seen here, discusses this point.

Here is a small excerpt from Two Distinct Approaches Aimed at Making Site Customization in WordPress Easier

During the State of The Word at WordCamp US 2015, Matt Mullenweg highlighted customization as the largest opportunity to improve the WordPress experience. In a recent interview on WordPress Weekly, Mullenweg expanded on his thoughts saying he could see the customizer being the main focus of a release.

You can check out the early versions of WordPress Customizer plugin over here at GitHub, https://github.com/Automattic/customize-direct-manipulation. Please note that this is a test only version and should not be used on a production site.

For a much more detailed explanation of how the Customizer API works, check out hte detailed guide here at WordPress.Org, https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/advanced-topics/customizer-api/

The Customizer is a framework for live-previewing any change to WordPress. It provides a simple and consistent interface for users to customize various aspects of their theme and their site, from colors and layouts to widgets, menus, and more. Themes and plugins alike can add custom options to the Customizer. The Customizer is the canonical way to add options to your theme.

It looks like the future of WordPress editing could be as simple as clicking an icon within the page itself. This Shift+click of an icon has been around for a bit, but not everyone is using it. Presently there are only a couple of examples of plugins utilizing this feature. An important concern to bear in mind will be to see how this type of feature will interact with current plugins and themes. However this framework works out in the future, this may be the new manner of customizing your WordPress site. Looking forward to see how this plays out over the next few years of WordPress evolution.
